The GOALS Program
A Mania Prevention Treatment Study
We are currently developing a new treatment for preventing mania. The therapy is meant to be a supplement to medications, for those who would like some extra protection from relapse.
Dr. Johnson and her team developed the treatment, called the GOALS program, drawing on basic research. That is, research evidence suggests that people who are vulnerable to mania set high life goals, react strongly to life events involving success and failure, and experience dramatic shifts in confidence with those life events. The program is designed to help people evaluate their personal triggers for mania, become more aware of those, and gain better control over those triggers.
The GOALS program is offered in one-to-one therapy and is designed to last 16 weeks or less. As part of our research studies, treatment is provided for free, but we ask you to complete interviews throughout treatment and for 6 months afterwards to tell us about how different aspects of the treatment works for you.
We expect that we will begin to offer the GOALS program this Fall. We are NOT recruiting for this study right now, but you may contact us for general information at Calmprogram@gmail.com.
